You know what’s always bugged me about cannabis stores in Ontario? Walking up to one feels like you’re about to buy something illegal. Those ridiculous blacked-out windows made every dispensary look sketchy as hell, even though we legalized this stuff years ago.

Well, apparently someone at Queen’s Park finally got a clue. As of May 23rd, cannabis dispensaries can ditch those stupid window coverings and actually look like real businesses.

About Damn Time

I’ve been saying this for years – why does my local cannabis store have to look like a pawn shop in a bad neighborhood? You can see bottles of vodka through the windows at the LCBO, but God forbid someone glimpses a jar of Permanent Marker by Eastcann at a dispensary.

The whole thing was backwards. These covered windows weren’t protecting anyone – they were basically putting a target on every cannabis dispensary in the province. Criminals knew exactly what was inside and that staff couldn’t see them coming.

The Real Story Behind This Change

Here’s what actually happened: dispensary owners got tired of being sitting ducks. Raju Saini from Piffingtons actually said “screw it” and removed his window coverings after getting robbed in January. Turns out he was ahead of the curve.

Jazz Samra from Sativa Bliss has been lobbying for this change forever. She posted on social media thanking everyone who helped push this through, saying cannabis stores don’t have to “operate in the shadows” anymore.

And honestly? Good for her. Running a legitimate cannabis dispensary shouldn’t feel like running a speakeasy. I’ve been to a couple of her Sativa Bliss locations and they’ve always felt more professional than most – now they can actually look the part too.

What This Actually Means for You

Next time you search “dispensary near me,” you might actually be able to tell which building it is without squinting at tiny address numbers. Revolutionary concept, right?

But seriously, this changes the whole vibe. Instead of feeling like you’re doing something shady, walking into a cannabis store will finally feel normal. You know, like buying any other legal product.

If you’re in the Toronto area and want to experience what a proper cannabis dispensary should look like, visit The BKRY Cannabis store at 3060 Dundas St W, ON M6P 1Z7. You can reach them at (647)-349-9333 to check their current selection or just drop by – they’ve been doing things right from the start, and now with these new rules, places like The BKRY can really showcase what professional cannabis  retail looks like.

The Catch (Because There’s Always One)

Before you get too excited, dispensaries still can’t go crazy with promotions visible from the street. Federal rules about protecting kids are still in play, which makes sense. But there’s a big difference between “don’t advertise to minors” and “hide everything like it’s contraband.”

Some cannabis store owners are pissed they didn’t get more warning. Jennawae Cavion from a Kingston dispensary just finished building out her store with the old rules in mind. That’s gotta sting – spending thousands on compliance just to have the rules change a month later.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

Look, this isn’t just about window coverings. It’s about treating cannabis like the legitimate industry it is. Every time we remove one of these ridiculous restrictions, we get a little closer to actual normalization.

Alberta figured this out in 2022. BC got there in 2023. Ontario’s always been slow to the party, but at least we showed up eventually.

The cannabis dispensary down the street from me has been dealing with this crap for years. Now maybe they can finally look like the professional operation they’ve always been, instead of some back-alley operation from a bad movie.

It’s a small change, but it’s the right one. About time our cannabis stores got to act like real businesses. And if you want to see how it’s done right, definitely visit The BKRY Cannabis store at 3060 Dundas St W – they’re setting the standard for what modern cannabis retail should be.
